How Do You Convert Inches to Pixels?

To convert inches to pixels, multiply the number of inches by the DPI (dots per inch): pixels = inches × DPI. At 300 DPI, 4 inches is 1,200 pixels; at 96 DPI the same 4 inches is 384 pixels.

  1. Enter the length in inches.
  2. Set the DPI (300 is the usual choice for print).
  3. Multiply, or let the converter do it.

To go the other way, divide: inches = pixels ÷ DPI. For centimeters and millimeters, 1 inch is 2.54 cm, or 25.4 mm.

Does DPI Change a Picture on Screen?

No. A picture has a fixed number of pixels. DPI only describes how many of those pixels are spread over one inch when it is printed, so a higher DPI means a smaller print from the same file. On screens the pixel count is what matters; 72 and 96 are common conventions, not a quality setting.

If a picture does not have enough pixels for the print size you want, you can upscale it first or read how to increase the DPI of an image.
