What Is a JFIF File?

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. A .jfif file holds a normal JPEG image; it only has a different extension. Some combinations of Windows and web browsers save pictures from the web as .jfif, and some apps and upload forms do not accept that extension.

If you only need an extension the app accepts, convert JFIF to JPG or read how to convert JFIF to JPG or PNG.

Will Converting JFIF to PNG Improve Quality?

No. The picture lost its fine detail when it was first saved as JPEG, and PNG cannot bring it back. PNG keeps the decoded pixels exactly, so nothing more is lost, but the file is usually several times larger than the JFIF. Choose PNG when a site requires it or when you plan to edit the image repeatedly; choose JPG when you want a small file.

Converting also removes metadata such as camera details and GPS location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. JFIF is a JPEG format, so a .jfif file contains a normal JPEG image.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JFIF?

PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel without the compression that makes JPEG files small.
